If that’s the case, then you’re in line for an ‘inflation-busting’ 25% rise to top up your ‘six-figure’ salary. ‘High court judges will see their £181,500 pay rise to almost £227,000 under plans announced by Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor David Gauke,’ reported the Daily Mail in an article headlined Where is the justice?
Circuit judges will also receive a 15% pay rise. The rises were lower than last year’s recommendation by the Senior Salaries Review Body which said that high court judges’ pay should go up 32% to £240,000 and crown court judges up 22% to £165,000. ‘We have reached a critical point,’ Gauke said. ‘There are too many vacancies and with the retirement of many judges looming we must act now before we see a serious impact on our courts and tribunals. ’UNISON assistant general secretary Christina McAnea said it was ‘telling that lowly-paid and female-dominated police and justice support staff’ had been offered little over the past few years because of ‘belt-tightening’. ‘But the money is there when the overwhelmingly male judiciary need some special treatment,’ she said.
