Reform 'ludicrous' automatic release of offenders half way through sentences, say former justice ministers
They warn current sentencing is “misleading and confusing” and say it should be replaced with a system where offenders get fixed sentences from which they earn time off for good behaviour.
It goes back to a Conservative 2010 manifesto plan, ditched by the Coalition Government with the LibDems, which would have required judges to set minimum and maximum sentences. Prisoners could earn time off for good behaviour.
